Brief History of The Faculty

The Faculty of Physical Sciences originated from the Defunct Faculty of Sciences as approved  by the University Governing Council at its meeting held on Wednesday 3rd September, 2025 which metamorphosized into 2 seamless Faculties namely: Faculty of Life Sciences and Faculty of Physical Sciences. The New Faculty also offers Pre- Degree programme.

The Departments in the Faculty

There are (7) seven Departments in the Faculty namely: Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Industrial Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics. Pre – Degree programme and the Computer centre are administered by the Faculty. Each of these Departments awards a Bachelor of Science programme with minimum of 8 semesters for UME students to complete. The codes of course ranged between 100 and 400 i.e. 100-199,200-299.300-399, and 400 -499. Each number is prefixed by a three letter subject code as follows: CHM for Chemistry, CSC for Computer Sciences, GEY for Geology, AGP for Applied Geophysics, ICH for Industrial Chemistry, MAT for Mathematics, PHY for Physics, STA for statistics, The Pre- Degree courses are numbered 001 -099

THE PHILOSOPHY

  1. Faculty of Physical Sciences is devoted to academic programmes crafted and designed to fulfill the institutional philosophy of a “Developmental University while adapting the innovative and tested changes in the scientific world in compliance with regulatory scientific processes issued to meet NUC accreditation and best practices for teaching – learning of physical science courses in the University system. To evolve a proactive scientific teaching learning environment with highly respected, sound and disciplined tutorial bench, the Faculty from inception developed and encouraged the offer of Basic physical science courses focusing on advanced scientific processes towards solving developmental needs of the state, nation and the global community at large.

The creation of additional departments and institutes an meet and cater for the challenges of the society, in the pursuit of academic and scientific work, teaching and research activities and laboratory test were conducted under strict academic discipline and scientific procedures from the out- set to ensure that the Faculty presents the best and most useful sets of graduates for the nation and the world at large. No doubt, this this would account for successes  in the turnout of science graduates as well as in other professional fields.

THE OBJECTIVE AND MISSION STATEMENT

Objectives:

The Faculty aside from its major aim of imparting knowledge in Basic and Applied Sciences to the society through training, research and extension services for sustainable development has the intension of offering by strengthening the already existing fields of work:

Offer a strong undergraduate programme with considerable diversity yet with area of concentration in the mainstream of modern basic physical sciences and it’s applied physical technology in engineering and statistics. To achieve the above priority, attention will be given to providing excellent research facilities for development of laboratories.

The Faculty of Physical Sciences  has the mandate to carry out teaching and research in the Basic Physical Sciences of: Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology & Applied Geophysics, Industrial Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Plant Science and Statistics.

Mission Statements;

-To develop strong undergraduate programmmes that is world class and marches with any programme anywhere.

-Expanding knowledge, with the use and application of ICT

-Increasing knowledge in research and application of the research to development.

-Promotion of relationship with all institutions with similar aims and objectives throughout the world.

Participating in private, grassroots and national development through application of Physical Sciences  to practical knowledge.
