Welcome Address
On behalf of the staff, students, and alumni, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Geology at Ekiti State University.
Since our establishment in 1983 as the Department of Geology and Geophysics, our vision has been clear: to build an exceptional center for geoscience education, research, and professional training. Over the past four decades, the Department has grown from its humble beginnings—with just two academic staff members and 20 pioneer students—into a robust, forward-looking academic hub. Today, we boast 14 academic staff, dedicated technical and administrative teams, modern demonstration laboratories, a departmental library, and a state-of-the-art geophysical workstation donated by ExxonMobil.
Geology and Applied Geophysics form the bedrock of the economic and environmental development of our nation. To ensure our students receive industry-responsive and globally competitive training, we have fully restructured our undergraduate curriculum in line with the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS). Furthermore, through our landmark partnership with the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation, our Department is being modernized with dedicated solar power, high-speed Starlink internet, upgraded computer hardware, and advanced field-testing equipment. Having already seen our students place among the top three in international academic competitions, our clear milestone is to solidify EKSU Geology as the premier geoscience faculty in Africa.
Whether you are an incoming student, a researcher, or an industry partner, we invite you to join us as we uncover what lies beneath our soil and engineer solutions for tomorrow.
Our Academic Philosophy & Focus
Our programmes are designed to integrate fundamental Earth and planetary sciences with practical applications in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology, and Computer Science. We train students to collect, analyze, and interpret complex geological, geophysical, and environmental data to tap critical subterranean resources—including groundwater, economic minerals, coal, and hydrocarbons—for the benefit of humanity.
Core Areas of Training & Specialization
- Geological Mapping & Field Studies
- Petroleum Geology & Exploration Geophysics
- Hydrogeology & Engineering Geology
